View World-Class Art At Our Luxury Hotel In Ithaca
On exhibit in The Statler Hotel’s Loews Lobby is a collection of paintings by Elsie Dinsmore Popkin, a 1958 Cornell University graduate and an accomplished artist who passed away in 2005. The works are on long–term loan to our Ithaca luxury hotel through the generosity of her husband, Mark, and her family.
These pastels – all depicting views of Cornell’s Ithaca campus and other locales – complement Popkin’s dramatic three–panel painting of a summer view up Cayuga Lake, which hangs behind the front desk and is owned by our Upstate New York luxury hotel.
Elsie Dinsmore Popkin was best known as a pastel artist who painted colorful landscapes and gardens on location. In her last decade, painting pastels of her beloved Cornell gave her immense pleasure. Elsie created several of the pastels on display in the Loews Lobby while looking out the windows of the two uppermost floors of Cornell’s Johnson Museum of Art. From there, she was able to capture the unique beauty of Cayuga Lake, the Cornell Arts Quad, and the gorges.
Another painting depicts the gardens at Cornell Plantations, one of Elsie’s favorite places, where she happily immersed herself among the flowers for hours each day. Other paintings were created when she was in residence for two weeks each summer for several years at Cornell’s Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island. There, she recorded in her paintings the rocky coastline and Celia Thaxter’s famous garden, which has been recreated on the island.
